The previous railway connection between Ankara and Sivas takes an arc that swings far south over Kayseri and is 602 km long. The new connection uses the existing route to Kırıkkale ( route kilometers 92.3). The new line to Sivas begins from here .

On the conventional route, travelers between Ankara and Sivas took about 10 hours. The travel time on the new line will be 2 hours and 50 minutes.

The new line is part of an east-west corridor from Istanbul to Baku ( Azerbaijan ) via Erzincan , Erzurum , Kars and Tbilisi ( Georgia ).

Technical parameters

The 405 km long high-speed line includes 49  tunnels with a total length of 66 km and 664 bridges. The existing line between Ankara and Kırıkkale has been expanded and upgraded for 140 km / h. The new line east of Kırıkkale is designed for a maximum speed of 250 km / h. Both route sections are electrified with 25 kV / 50 Hz , have two tracks and are equipped with ETCS Level 1 . The route is intended to be used by both passenger and freight traffic .

history

Construction work on a first section began on March 13, 2009. The line was originally scheduled to go into operation in 2018. At the end of November 2018 it was announced that the line would go into operation at the end of 2019. The test drives began on March 5, 2020, with Turkish Transport Minister Mehmet Cahit Turhan accompanying a test train. The opening of the route is now planned for mid-2020 [obsolete] . The construction of the connection cost 1.3 billion euros. For the planned operation are first four pairs of trains per day are planned.
