Yerköy is a Turkish city and capital of the district of the same name in the Central Anatolian province of Yozgat . It is the third largest city in this province and received the rank of Belediye (municipality) in 1945 .

city

Geographically, Yerköy about 40 km west of Yozgat , about 60 km south of Hattuša (at Boğazkale), the former capital of the Hittites , about 70 km north of the city of Kırşehir and 180 km east of the Turkish capital Ankara away . The village was founded in 1925 as a village. With the construction of the railway line in 1930, Yerköy grew rapidly. In 1935 Yerköy received the status of a Bucak , ten years later that of a district ( İlçe ).

The city lies directly on the border between the two provinces of Yozgat and Kırşehir , and it is 6 kilometers to Çiçekdağı (trunk road D785). As the urban areas grew, the city not only expanded towards Yozgat, but also got urban areas on the Kırşehir side. The European route E88 runs through the district and the border town .

district

The district is externally bordered by three provinces: Çorum ( Sungurlu district ) in the north, Kırıkkale ( Delice district ) in the east and Kirsehir in the southwest ( Akçakent and Çiçekdağı districts ). In the northeast, the central district ( Merkez ) of the provincial capital Yozgat forms the border and in the southeast the district of Şefaatli . With a population density of 30.6 inhabitants per km², the district of Yerköy is just below the provincial value.

The district created in 1945 consists of the district town (77.5% of the district population) and 60 villages ( Köy ) with a total population of 7,996 inhabitants. This corresponds to an average of 133 inhabitants per village (the lowest value within the province). The scale of the population goes from 807 ( Saray ) down to 23. 21 villages have more than the average population.
