In 1855, under the name Mecidiye (in honor of the then ruling sultan Abdülmecid ), it became the center of a Nahiye of the same name , which was administratively attached to Yozgat . Yozgat was at that time under the name Bozok the main town of a Sanjak and in multiple changes with Ankara until the establishment of the Vilâyet Ankara in 1867 the main town of the Eyâlet Ankara or Bozok. Sultan Abdülaziz raised the Nahiye to a Kaza . After it was moved, the center of the circle 1910 to 1912 in the village Kırdök, the was the first year the First World War by Enver Pasha , the center temporarily to Mucur laid. At the urging of the residents, the Mecidiye district was restored. According to the information on the municipality's website, the district was dissolved from Yozgat in 1924 and added to the Kırşehir Province. However, Mecidiye is mentioned as Kaza des Sanjaks Kırşehir as early as 1912. In 1930 the district and town received their current name.

When the province of Kırşehir was dissolved in 1954, the district came to the province of Yozgat and after the reestablishment of the province of Kırşehir in 1957 it reverted to it.
