Sarıkaya is a city and capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Yozgat . The place is about 60 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Yozgat and was previously called Terzilli.

The district is located in the center of the province. It borders on Sorgun County to the northwest , Saraykent County to the north, Akdağmadeni County to the northeast , Çayıralan County to the southeast , Boğazlıyan County to the south and the Central County to the west for less than a kilometer . The D-805 road connects Sarıkaya with Sorgun in the northwest and Boğazlıyan in the south. About six kilometers north of the district town, the Kanak Çayı River flows through the district from east to west . Twelve kilometers northeast of Sarıkaya is the Koçcağız Barajı reservoir , in the extreme north of the Doğankent Göleti . Noteworthy elevations are the İnce Tepe with 1349 meters and the Bambal Tepesi with 1694 meters in the south and the Terzili Tepesi with 1147 meters northwest of the main town.

The district was split off from Boğazlıyan district in 1957 and is divided into the district town ( raised to Belediye in 1957 ) and the municipality (Belediye) Karayakup with 1,743 inhabitants. Furthermore there are 56 villages ( Köy ) with a total of 13,226 inhabitants (40 percent of the district population) in the district. The average village size is 236 inhabitants, only Babayağmur has more than a thousand inhabitants (1,089). The village Köprücek was 2018 Mahalle (districts) of the county seat.

With a population density of 32.4 inh. Per km², the district is slightly above the provincial value, the urban population is just under 60 percent.
