Sorgun is a city in the Turkish province of Yozgat and the capital of the district of the same name . The city is located about 35 km by road east of the provincial capital Yozgat and is the second largest city in the province. Sorgun received the rank of Belediye (municipality) in 1905 .

The district is located in the center of the province and borders the province of Çoprum in the north . Furthermore, it is framed by the districts of Aydıncık , Çekerek , Saraykent , Akdağmadeni , Sarıkaya and the central district of Yozgat , starting in the north counterclockwise .

The district was formed on June 26, 1926 and consists of the district town (65.8% of the district's population) and seven other Belediye (municipalities):

There are also 74 villages ( Köy ) with a total population of 12,778 inhabitants, i.e. an average of 173 inhabitants per village. The scale of the population ranges from 931 ( Belencumafakılı ) down to 11 ( Büyükkışla ), the latter being also the smallest in the entire province. 23 villages have more than the average (173) inhabitants.

The district of Sorgun has a higher population density than the province with 44.9 inhabitants per km² , the urban population is 83.89 percent and is the second highest in the province.

Worth seeing

In the south of the district lie the reservoir of the Gelingüllü dam and on the road to Sarıkaya the settlement hill Alışar Höyük, which has been inhabited since at least Hittite times . Another settlement from the Hittite period is Kerkenes, about twelve kilometers southwest of the district town . Later the Median city ​​of Pteria was located there, where in the 6th century BC. The battle of Pteria took place.

Sports

With Sorgun Belediyespor, Sorgun owns a football club that was founded in 1959. The team played in the fifth highest league and highest amateur league in Turkish football, founded in 2010. In the 2013/14 season of the BAL , Sorgun Belediyespor took second place and qualified for the play-offs for promotion to the 3rd division. The penalty shoot-out ended 4-3 for Halide Edip Adıvar SK (HEASK for short) after the play-off game in Ankara ended in a 1-1 draw.

In the 2014/2015 season, Sorgun Belediyespor represented Yozgat Province in the Turkish Football Cup , as Yozgatspor (team from the same province) were relegated to the BAL in the previous season. In the preliminary round, Sorgun Belediyespor won 2-1 against MKE Kırıkkalespor and qualified for the first main round. The next opponent in the 1st main round was Etimesgut Belediyespor . The game ended after 90 minutes 2-0 for the guest, both cup games took place in Bozok Stadı in Yozgat.
