district

The district is located in the northeast of the province. It borders Akdağmadeni County to the south, Saraykent County to the southwest , Çekerek County to the west, and Tokat Province to the north and east . The southern border of the district roughly follows the course of the Çekerek Çayı . A part of the Deveci Dağları Mountains runs through the north from east to west . There arise numerous small rivers that flow northwards from the area of the district and mostly flow towards the Çekerek Çayı in the northwest or the more distant Yeşilırmak in the northeast. The Kara Dere and Akdoğan Deresi belonging to the Çekerek form a reservoir at their confluence.

The district was split off from the eastern part of the Çekerek district on May 20, 1990 (Law No. 3644). Until then he was a Bucak in this district and had a population of 21,540 in the last census before the change of area (1985), which corresponded to a share of 29% of the district's population at that time.

At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district town (41% of the district population) with Halıköy (1,830 inhabitants) and another municipality ( Belediye ). In addition, 20 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 254 residents belonged to the district. The scale of the population ranged from 715 ( Yavuhasan ) down to 68, eight villages had more inhabitants than the average. In 2018, five former villages became districts (mahalls) of the two cities - Akçakale , Yoncalık and Yukarıkızılöz came to Halıköy and Yakacık and Yangı came to Kadışehri.

With a population density of 24.8, the district was below that of the province (31.0 inhabitants per km²). At the end of 2018, the urban population was 56.67 percent.
