The Hochsimmerturm is an 18 m high observation tower on the Eifel mountain Hochsimmer , which rises near Ettringen in the district of Mayen-Koblenz , Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ).

Tower description

The Hochsimmerturm stands on the east summit ( 583.3  m above sea  level ) of the Hochsimmer, which is 587.9 m high as part of the west summit  . It was built between 1909 and 1911 by the Eifelverein Mayen and is located in the area of ​​the local community of St. Johann , which, together with Ettringen, provided the building site free of charge. In the following years, developed from basalt stone built building into a popular lookout point . After the earthquake of April 13, 1992, the tower had to be closed to visitors because it was in disrepair. Since neither the Eifelverein nor the municipality of St. Johann could raise the necessary funds to save the tower, it was transferred to the ownership of the municipality of Ettringen. In the following years the tower was completely renovated, which was financed by the municipality of Ettringen, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and local industrial companies. The walls of the tower, which tapers slightly towards the top, were fixed with steel bolts and stone slabs. Today the Hochsimmerturm is a listed building and is entered in the list of cultural monuments of Ettringen .

The tower entrance is in the south-east wall and is reached via a flight of five steps. Inside, stone stairs with 79 steps lead over two intermediate platforms to the viewing platform , which is almost 17 m high. A small metal platform is located in the middle of the platform to improve the viewing angle. Some antennas are attached to the tower and platform.

About 30 m northwest of the observation tower is a transmission tower , about 25 m south a transmission mast .

Lookout point

From the viewing platform of the Hochsimmerturm, you can see the northeastern neighboring mountain Hochstein , Ettringen and St. Johann as well as Mayen and Maifeld . In good visibility conditions, the Cologne Cathedral can be seen.
