Flood in Hann. Münden
In the course of history there have been numerous floods in Hann. Münden , which are due to the city's location at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers to the Weser . The Magdalen flood of July 24, 1342 is considered the most devastating flood disaster .
history
In earlier centuries floods regularly occurred in Münden in the winter months when ice drifts on the rivers, snowmelt and rain occurred together. There were particularly severe floods in the years:

From the period between the 16th and 18th centuries, there are many floods that were accompanied by ice on the rivers and damaged the Mündener bridges. In many cases, the city was only passable by boat. For example, in 1552 the water at the Blasius Church was as high as a man, so that no service could be held. During the flood of 1682, the church, where births and deaths were recorded, could only be reached by raft.
There are high water marks on historic buildings in many places in the city . The best known are those on the Mündener Rathaus , the Packhof and on a pillar of the Blasius Church, on which there are inscriptions from 1342 (Latin) and 1552:
- Translation: In the year of the Lord 1342 on July 24th there was a flood from the Weser and Fulda and the so great height of the water touched the lower edge of this ashlar
- In 1552 the 10th of January the Water went down on this stone and in the following night a screcklick Wedder with Th. Donner
Today flood disasters are rare because the water level of the Fulda has been regulated since the construction of the Edertalsperre in 1913. Occasionally the Schlagdspitze between Bremer and Wanfrieder Schlagd falls under water in the winter months . Likewise, in some years the cellars of residential buildings in the historic suburb of Blume will fill up during floods .
More recently, a flood occurred in 1995 with a water level of 6.32 meters when the Edertalsperre overflowed and there was a backwater in the Werra. The last flood so far (2017) occurred in January 2011 when thaw and rain caused the water level to rise to 6.20 meters.
