The Münden town hall is a listed building in the city of Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony , whose core dates back to the 14th century. A renovation at the beginning of the 17th century gave it its façade in the Weser Renaissance style, which has been preserved to this day .

Building description and history

The town hall is located with the St. Blaise Church in the center of the historic town center. The market square is on the north side of the town hall with its façade.

As excavations in 1978 revealed, there was a previous stone building at the location of the town hall. It was a town hall or merchant's house that was built around 1200. A rectangular, two-storey Gothic hall was built on the walls of this building in the 14th century . Its stepped gable is still recognizable today on the south side of the building. Between 1603 and 1618, the town hall was rebuilt by the Lemgo master builder Georg Crossmann .

With the inclusion of the older rectangular structure, an almost square structure with a north-facing facade was created . It is by lucarnes in three axes divided. On the western side there is a two-storey, decoratively designed hallway of the council chamber. The showpiece of the facade is the main portal with the entrance as a flight of stairs and a wide arbor . The stairs leading down to the Ratsweinkeller are integrated into the arbor.

The lower town hall on the ground floor, known as (Koph-Hus) , has a large hall that was once the commodity exchange where merchants made contracts. The space is decorated with large-format wall paintings from the years 1928 to 1929 , which show extracts from the city's history. The upper town hall hall as a wedding hall (wedding house) is used today for exhibitions and receptions.

There is a carillon on the front facade that shows a series of figures with scenes from the life of the craft surgeon Doctor Eisenbarth and plays the melody of Ich bin der Doktor Eisenbart every day at 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00 .

1975 to 1980 the outer walls of the town hall were renovated due to structural damage. The roof structure, whose beams date from the 17th century, had been in need of renovation since the 1970s. A complete renovation began in 2015. During the work, historical decorative beams were discovered, which should be preserved as far as possible.

use

From the Middle Ages until today, the town hall served as the seat of the city council and (parts of) the city administration with the registry office . Today the tourist information is also located in the building. The building used to have other functions, such as a wedding house, court venue and meeting place for the merchants' guild .

In the basement there is the Council's Brauhaus , which again as since 2003 brewpub is operated.
