The Liebenstein memory (commonly known as "flood storage Liebenstein" or "dam Liebenstein") is an artificial, for flood -scale dam in Liebenstein (district of the municipality Plößberg ) and Tirschenreuth in Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth in Bavaria .
Geography and history
The body of water is located 20 km northeast of Weiden . The reservoir is located in the upper reaches of the Waldnaab (Tirschenreuther Waldnaab). The flood retention basin was built between 1965 and 1968. In the 1990s, the system was modernized twice. The dam consists of loose earth material.
use
The reservoir is also used to increase the low water level and generate electricity . A small hydropower plant with a Francis turbine with an output of 132 kilowatts generates around 0.55 million kWh of electrical energy per year.
Because of its scenic location, the Liebenstein reservoir is a popular local recreation area . The area around the reservoir is ideal for boating (rowing, paddling), fishing and hiking. Camping has not been permitted for several years

The reservoir or its bank areas and the surrounding area are the habitat of rare animal and plant species.
Incidents
- On March 17, 2020, the body of a 71-year-old woman was recovered from the Liebenstein flood reservoir.
