The Hofeteich (originally called St. Donatsteich or Sankt Donathsteich ) is an approximately 1.1 hectare , artificially created pond in Wilschdorf , a district of the municipality of Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

General

The Hofeteich is located directly on the state road 160 in the part of Wilschdorf called Oberdorf . The pond is traversed by the Wilschdorfer Dorfbach, a tributary of the Wesenitz . In the middle of the water there is a small, tree-lined island.

history

Since the 15th century, the Stolpener care and thus also Wilschdorf belonged to the diocese of Meißen . The bishops maintained numerous fishing waters in the Stolpen area, in which mainly carp were raised. Since predatory fish, for example pike, lived in almost all of these ponds, the young carp used there had to be of a certain minimum size in order not to be eaten. For this purpose, so-called streak and stretch ponds were set up for spawning and rearing for the first time, in which only carp were found. Johann VI. von Saalhausen , Bishop of Meißen, had the court pond “in front of the Caraswalde above Wilschdorf” (the forest area stretched much further in the 16th century than today) for the breeding of the young carp. The pond was consecrated to St. Donatus of Arezzo, an Italian bishop from the 4th century, and called St. Donatsteich or Sankt Donathsteich. The surviving records of the diocese describe the rearing of 1,000 shock (equivalent to 60,000 pieces) young fish ("year old carps"), which were always put into the yard pond on St. George's Day (April 23). The fish grew up in the pond until Gallus Day (October 16) and were then relocated to the other breeding waters of the Meißner Stift after they had reached a size with which they could no longer easily fall prey to other fish. While the carp were being fished, the farm pond was drained completely. The accountability report of Bishop Johann VI. von Saalhausen put the value of the pond at 600 guilders .

nature

The farm pond is officially used as a fishing water (water number D 10-110) and is therefore subject to the provisions of the Saxon Fisheries Act (SächsFischG). The main fish species are eel , pike , carp , tench , whitefish and pikeperch . The ice fishing is not permitted in Hofeteich.

Some bank and edge areas of the pond are overgrown with reeds . Various deciduous trees grow around the water and on the small island in the middle, for example white willow , silver birch and silver linden .
