The Hope Church is a Protestant church in Koblenz . It was inaugurated in the Pfaffendorfer Höhe district in 1966 as part of the military pastoral care and is named after the divine virtue of hope .

history

With the formation of the Bundeswehr in 1957, the first soldiers moved into the Augusta , Gneisenau and Fritsch barracks in Koblenz and the Deines-Bruchmüller barracks in Lahnstein . Many soldiers' families thus settled in the surrounding districts. Initially, it was planned to set up a military parish on Pfaffendorfer Höhe for the new Protestant believers as part of the military chaplaincy. However, after an agreement between the military bishop and the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland on February 3, 1961, it was decided to set up a pastoral care area on the right bank of the Rhine. The Koblenz architect Wolfgang Schumacher built the Hope Church on Pfaffendorfer Höhe from 1964 to 1966. The foundation stone was laid on November 9, 1964, and the inauguration was carried out on April 17, 1966 by Joachim Beckmann , the President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . The cost of building the church was financed by the military chaplaincy and the armed forces. In 1967 a kindergarten was built next to the church and the rectory . The Hope Church belongs to the Evangelical Church Community of Koblenz-Pfaffendorf .

Construction and equipment

The Hope Church was built as a rectangular concrete frame building with a flat roof. In addition to the visible concrete supports, the wall surfaces are covered with Dutch hand-made clinker brick inside and outside . The bell tower standing free next to the church is structured like the main building. The horizontal ceiling inside is clad with wood, the floors are made of ceramic tiles. The principles such as the altar , pulpit and baptismal font are made of exposed concrete .

The light falls on three sides of the building through colorful stained glass windows into the church. On the front wall there is a large ceramic relief depicting the Last Supper . The design for the windows and the relief come from the Höhr-Grenzhausen artist Eugen Keller , but they were executed by his son Reiner Keller.

Parish

The Hope Church in the Kirchen Höhen district belongs to the "Evangelical Church Community Koblenz-Pfaffendorf", which also includes the Reconciliation Church in Arenberg , the Luther Chapel in Horchheim and the Evangelical Church in Pfaffendorf .
