The Hohe Schule , formerly also called Aalhauck , near Völkershausen in the Bavarian district of Rhön-Grabfeld is about 538  m above sea level. NHN is the second highest mountain in the eastern Rhön foreland after the Wurmberg ( 547.7  m ) .

geography

location

The Hohe Schule rises on the eastern edge of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve , the border of which runs north-south over the high mountain ranges. Its summit is 1.8 kilometers east-southeast of the village church of Völkershausen (to Willmars ), 2.6 km north-northwest of that of Eußenhausen (to Mellrichstadt ) and 2.5 km (as the crow flies ) south-southwest of the church of Hermannsfeld (to Rhönblick ). The border between the areas of Willmars (in the west) and Mellrichstadt (in the east) runs across the summit region in a north-south direction. In addition, the Rhine-Weser watershed runs across it. The Ellenbach rises to the east of the mountain and the Linz to the northwest .

Natural allocation

The high school belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) and in the main unit Vorder- und Kuppenrhön (with land ridge) (353) to the subunit Eastern Rhön foreland (353.3).

Geology and geomorphology

The high school consists of shell limestone , which distinguishes the mountain from the Rhön and the foreland west of the Willmarser saddle. Due to the rock, a flat summit plateau was created. There is a steep edge to the west, the slope is steeply sloping to the north and east. The mountain falls at its flattest to the south.

Prehistoric ramparts

On the high school there was a fortification from the Hallstatt or Latène period . It is believed that it was used to monitor the trade route through the Ellenbachtal. The system consisted of a trench wall system with an attached wall. The area covered was 5.5 hectares. During an excavation, shards from the Hallstatt period and from the Latène period a blue broken glass arm ring, a bronze fibula and a preserved round millstone and eight other fragments of such millstones were found. So far there has only been one emergency excavation in the 1980s because of the construction of a forest path. A planned excavation is still pending.

Hiking and viewing opportunities

The high school is accessed through forest roads. The European long-distance hiking trails E3 and E6 lead over its northern flank . In addition, the (pre-) historical hiking trail Völkershausen runs over the mountain. Several panels explain the existing walls. There are several seating areas with a blackboard on the mountain. From the summit itself, you used to have a good view of Thuringia , which has recently become overgrown by trees.
