Hohenbrand is a hamlet consisting of two farms and a district of the municipality of Nagel in the Upper Franconian district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains in northeast Bavaria .
Geography and transport links
Hohenbrand is located a little east of the Wurmloh Pass at the foot of the Kosseine . The hamlet is connected to the state road St 2665 by a narrow strait .
Place name
The place name was originally "Hohe Brenndt" or "Hohe Brandt" and refers to the burning of bushes and tree stumps to gain and keep arable and pasture areas free. The "high" describes the altitude. At 670 m above sea level , Hohenbrand is still above the Wurmloh Pass, making it the highest part of the municipality of Nagel.
history
The village of Pfeffergrün was probably located in the area of today's hamlet in the Middle Ages . Probably due to a deterioration in the climate, the farmers could no longer maintain themselves at the altitude and had to give up the village in the course of the 14th century.
In 1566, the Lords of Fahrenbach built a forester's house and a small farm on the site of today's farms.
The medieval escort road from Kemnath in Upper Palatinate to the margravial Wunsiedel led via Hohenbrand. The Kemnath-Wunsiedel section was part of a long-distance trade route connecting Regensburg and Nuremberg with Prague . The border between the Upper Palatinate and the Principality of Bayreuth ran a little south through the town of Reichenbach .
The escort road at that time ran east of today's state road. The traffic was only relocated at the end of the 18th century and has since crossed the Wurmlohpass at the lowest possible point. Preserved parts of the escort road are used today as a field and hiking trail.
Hiking trails
The high trail of the Fichtelgebirgsverein runs through Hohenbrand . A little above the hamlet there is a parking lot for hikers, starting point for ascents of the Kosseine.
