The Holbeinsteg is a bridge built in 1990 over the Main in Frankfurt for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects Holbeinstrasse in Sachsenhausen with Windmühlstrasse in the Bahnhofsviertel .
Technology and architecture
The Holbeinsteg is constructed as a suspension bridge . It was developed by city planner and architect Albert Speer (Jr.) as part of the design of the museum bank . With a total length of 210 meters, the bridge has a span of 142 meters over the Main. In the main opening, the carriageway slab, a steel box girder, is suspended from two suspension ropes with sloping ropes. The suspension ropes are attached to two A-shaped, 32.7 meter high pylons and anchored in the abutments by pairs of retaining ropes . The structural engineers were the König und Heunisch engineering office .
Importance in the transport network
After the Eiserner Steg (1868) and the Arthur-von-Weinberg-Steg (1983), the Holbeinsteg is the third car-free Main Bridge in Frankfurt.
The entrance to the Städel and the Liebieghaus are located near the southern bridgehead . In addition to the 15 cultural institutions on the banks of the museum, the Holbeinsteg also connects the Mainuferpark, popular as a leisure area, below the Schaumainkai with the Nice on the Untermainkai . It is signposted as part of cycle route 5 (Museumsufer – Bockenheim) and is therefore a central element of the Frankfurt cycle network. There are no blue regulations ; as a public path, it should be used equally on foot and by bike.
