The Deutschherrnbrücke is a double-track railway bridge with a pedestrian walkway over the Main in Frankfurt am Main and was built by the MAN Gustavsburg plant. It was built from 1911 to 1913 at Mainkilometer 36,900 as a connection between the then new Ostbahnhof on the Frankfurt – Hanau railway line and the Südbahnhof .

location

The northern bridgehead is in the Ostend district , the southern one in Sachsenhausen . With the commissioning of the Deutschherrnbrücke on April 1, 1913, passenger traffic on the connecting railway was stopped.

View from the north

The Deutschherrnbrücke is a steel arch bridge . The two outer arches of the bridge each span 74.60 meters, the middle arch 124.80 meters. While the northern pillar stands directly on the banks of the Main, the southern one is a river pillar .

On March 26, 1945, the southern arch of the bridge was blown up by a command of the Wehrmacht in order to make the advance more difficult for the troops of the US Army advancing from the south . One day later, the city was nevertheless occupied without much resistance. The destroyed bridge was makeshift at the end of 1945 and finally rebuilt between July 1947 and June 3, 1949.

A permanent sound installation by Sam Auinger and Bruce Odland has been on the bridge since 2011 . A red and a blue ball were stretched between the bridge struts, which act as loudspeakers and reproduce ambient noises and bridge vibrations by means of resonance pipes. The installation “SONIC VISTA” is part of a series of several art installations within the framework of the Frankfurt Green Belt .
