Sam Auinger (born February 23, 1956 in Linz , Austria) is an Austrian composer and sound artist .

Since the early 1980s, Auinger preoccupied with questions of composition , the computer music , the sound design and psychoacoustics . Together with Bruce Odland, he founded O + A in 1989, whose central theme is 'hearing perspective'.

He often worked with the bassist and composer Hannes Strobl (tamtam) and the singer and performer David Moss (technologies). After several joint projects, Sam Auinger, Dietmar Offenhuber and Hannes Strobl founded the artist group 'stadtmusik' in 2005.

Sam Auinger received, among other things, the Culture Prize of the City of Linz in 2002 and the SKE Publicity Prize in 2007. In 1997 he was a guest of the DAAD's Berlin artist program . In 2008/2009 he was a scholarship holder at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 2010 he became Bonn's first urban sound artist. In 2011 he was invited as a featured artist at Ars Electronica in Linz.

He has worked with urban planners and architects, and has participated in international symposia on urban planning and architecture. He was invited as a key-note speaker at the ESOF 2010 in Turin. In addition to his artistic work, he gave lectures and led workshops on the subject of sound and architecture.

He lives in Linz and Berlin .

Today Sam Auinger is considered one of the leading protagonists of international sound art in public spaces. His intensive examination of questions of composition, psychoacoustics and the reception of sound events, as well as his interest in current findings in neurology and psychology in questions of perception , lead his artistic work to sound art in the early 1980s. From the mid-1980s onwards, he increasingly carried out installation work in public and semi-public spaces. His main interest is the question of how living spaces are perceived aurally.

In 1987, at Ars Electronica, the first joint work with Bruce Odland was created. The sound installation 'riverworks' in the Linz Donaupark becomes the cornerstone of their joint artistic theme 'hearing perspective'. In the hearing perspective, the spatial environment is primarily perceived by hearing and what is heard is understood as the cultural language of the place. In 1989 the two artists founded 'O + A' (Odland + Auinger) and are now developing more than 50 temporary and permanent sound installations in Europe, North America and Asia. Parallel to their artistic work, they run an intensive discourse and communication program with lectures, workshops and seminars. Previous highlights of her artistic research have been her performance lecture 'towards a hearing perspective' as a keynote at the ESOF 2010 in Turin and the publication of her article 'Reflections on the Sonic Commons' in the LEONARDO MUSIC JOURNAL, Vol. 19.

Since the mid-1990s, Sam Auinger has been conveying his artistic research internationally in lectures, soundwalks, workshops and publications. From 2008 to 2012 he was visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts and headed the 'Experimental Sound Design' department in the ' Sound Studies ' master's course .

In his work he repeatedly creates works that illustrate the interdependencies between the designed space and the sound events that take place in it. They make everyday habits, personal history and cultural background tangible as important parameters in our sound perception. In 2010 the overview map 'hoerorte bonn' was created as part of his work as a city sound artist of Bonn. This documents urban places with special auditory qualities and situations and is intended to invite you to consciously hear the urban living space.
