reception

Bruce Odland is an internationally recognized composer and sound artist. After studying classical composition at Northwest University, he turned to natural and everyday sounds. With the help of probes and contact microphones, he records detailed sounds from natural and urban environments and defines them as “musical sculptures”. He realized his first commissioned works, such as Sonic Excavation 1979 or Riverworks 1980, for institutions of the visual arts such as the Denver Art Museum or the Aspen Center in front of Visual Arts.

In 1979 the Denver Center Theater in Colorado (US) became aware of his "musical sculptures" and established the post of director for sound and music especially for him. This enables him to test his new compositions in over 20 productions and to develop a new form of theater staging. His compositions encompass all aspects of sound. To get more control over the sound, he developed his own techniques for theater sound and speaker designs. To this day he works with well-known directors and artists such as Peter Sellers, Tina Packer, Kristin Linklater, Robert Woodruff, JoAnne Akalaitis, Laurie Anderson, Andre Gregory, Jenniver Tipton, Wallace Shawn and the Wooster Group.

Through his work at the theater, Bruce Odland acquired a distinctive acoustic expertise, which he also brought into his productions of radio pieces and film music.

His work is noticed early in Europe. In 1987, an invitation from the Ars Electronica Festival led to the first joint work with the sound artist Sam Auinger and led to a permanent partnership under the name O + A. In the meantime they have developed more than 50 temporary and permanent sound installations in Europe, North America and Asia.

In spring 2013 he and a group of several artists succeeded in saving an old water tank in Colorado (US) from demolition with the help of a crowd funding campaign. The tank, which was never used, became the “Center for Sonic Arts” and, due to its unique acoustic properties, should be retained as a performance location for every artist and musician.
