Holthausen was first mentioned in a document in 1338 in connection with a feudal contract of Count Gottfried IV.
From the year 1368 the place is subject to the Oedingen monastery . The church is first mentioned in a document in 1446. In 1486 the place consisted of 12 farms. In 1744 there are 14 families.
A short mining activity began in 1866 with the opening of the Franziska mine .
The Holthausen Voluntary Fire Brigade was founded in 1906.
