description

Holzhauser cellar stones 1

Grave 1 ( location coordinates: 52 ° 53 ′ 27.4 ″  N , 8 ° 21 ′ 44.4 ″  E ) is north of Holzhausen and just under 1 km south of the federal highway 213 . The grave is in a fairly good state of preservation. It has an east-west oriented burial chamber with a length of 10 m and a width of 1.5 m in the west and 2 m in the east. There was no enclosure. The recording of the grave by Ernst Sprockhoff in 1929 showed that most of the original stones in the burial chamber are still there. The two wall stones on the narrow sides and six wall stones each on the long sides are still in situ . Another wall stone on the south side fell over. The easternmost wall stone on the north side is missing. Of the original seven capstones, five are still preserved: four have fallen into the chamber, the fifth is still roughly in its original position. The chamber has a gap on the south side. This is where the original entrance was likely to have been, so the grave can be assigned to the type of passage grave .

Grave 2 ( location ) is about 400 m southeast of grave 1 and is separated from it by the Holzhauser Bäke. It is located right on the edge of a forest area. Its state of preservation is significantly worse than that of grave 1. The grave chamber is oriented roughly east-west. It has a length of 10.5 m and a width of 1.4 m. In 1929 Ernst Sprockhoff was able to determine that the two wall stones on the narrow sides as well as one wall stone on the southern and five wall stones on the northern long side were still in situ. In addition, there were more than a dozen other stones scattered around, which are probably more wall stones or broken cap stones. Another survey of the grave by Bernd Rothmann in 2007 showed that six of the stones recorded by Sprockhoff had been removed in the meantime. In the following years there was further destruction.

Other cellar stones called large stone graves

The name "cellar stones" is represented three times for large stone graves in the Wildeshauser Geest . The other groups are the Steinloger cellar stones further to the west and the Ahlhorner cellar stones .
