The Holzhausenstraße is a street in Frankfurt . It is located in the Holzhausenviertel and is one of the best addresses in Frankfurt's Nordend . The street was built on the basis of a building code issued by Mayor Franz Adickes in 1891 , and it still has a largely closed Wilhelminian style development with numerous listed buildings.

Derivation of the street name

The street is named after the Holzhausen patrician family , who had lived in Frankfurt for centuries and who once came from Friedrichsdorf - Burgholzhausen and who chose their family name after this place.

The course of the road

Epiphany Church
Holzhausenstrasse 17th

Holzhausenstrasse begins at Eckenheimer Landstrasse and ends after just under 890 meters at Hansaallee. Your first section runs between Eckenheimer Landstrasse and Oeder Weg and is relatively short. The Protestant Epiphany Church is on the right-hand side of the road at the intersection with Oeder Weg . Built in 1901 from limestone in neo -Gothic style as Immanuelkirche , it was badly damaged by aerial bombs during World War II . In the remaining ruins with the largely preserved tower, a new building in the style of the time was set in 1956. In 2006 the church was extensively renovated.

The longest section of Holzhausenstrasse is between Oeder Weg and Eschersheimer Landstrasse . It is characterized by Wilhelminian style villa buildings, most of which are well preserved because of the low level of war damage in this area. 23 buildings built between 1891 and 1898 are listed as historical monuments .

In front of house number 16 there is a stumbling block for Magda Spiegel (1887–1944). Originally from Prague native Jew worked as since 1917 contralto at the Frankfurt Opera , the ensemble she belonged to the 1935th After being released due to persecution , in 1936 she moved into an apartment on the second floor of the house at Holzhausenstrasse 16, which she was dismissed in 1941 because as a Jew she was no longer allowed to live in an Aryan house.

The Holzhausenpark opens up on the corner of Justinianstrasse and has a large children's playground in its northern area. This is limited to the west by Hammanstrasse . In the last section of Holzhausenstrasse before the intersection with Eschersheimer Landstrasse is the grounds of the Frankfurt Diakonissenhaus on the right . The entrance to the former deaconess hospital with a geriatric clinic and a clinic for plastic surgery was on Holzhausenstrasse . At the moment (autumn 2017) only the Wilhelminian style façade remains, which is to be integrated into the future residential development.

On the other side of the intersection - and on the same side as the hospital - is a house on the corner that houses the Frankfurt branch of IKB Deutsche Industriebank . From here the last section of Holzhausenstrasse runs, which already belongs to the Westend district and is just as short as the section between Eckenheimer Landstrasse and Oeder Weg. At the end of the street you will find the sports hall of the Elisabethenschule in the neighboring Vogtstraße on the right-hand side .
