Horace Ott

Horace Ott (* 1933 in St. Matthews (South Carolina) ) is an American pianist , arranger , record producer , composer and orchestra director.

Ott attended John Ford High School and Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg; During this time he wrote an arrangement for Duke Ellington's Satin Doll . He then studied at South Carolina State University , where he received his bachelor's degree. After his discharge from the US Army, he stayed in New York and worked as a musician, composer and arranger. Although his wife Gloria Caldwell is registered as the author, he is considered the co-composer of Nina Simone's successful title Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood . He also worked a. a. with Sam Cooke , Nat King Cole , the Count Basie Orchestra / Joe Williams , Dizzy Gillespie , Shirley Bassey , Aretha Franklin , Solomon Burke , Roberta Flack , Johnny Mathis , Roberto Carlos , George Benson , Jerry Butler , Carla Thomas , The Shirelles , Little Anthony and the Imperials , Joey DeFrancesco, and The Stylistics . He also arranged the Village People's hit YMCA . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 68 recording sessions between 1963 and 1995, in addition to the aforementioned also with Rusty Bryant , Lou Donaldson , Ronnie Foster , Panama Francis , Groove Holmes , Bobbi Humphrey , Etta Jones , Jimmy McGriff , Houston Person , Bernard Purdie , Irene Reid , Gil Scott-Heron , Leon Thomas and Jimmy Witherspoon .
