Horst Wolfgang Böhme

Horst Wolfgang Böhme (born May 1, 1940 in Stettin ) is a German archaeologist with a focus on late antiquity / early Middle Ages and castle research .

Life

Böhme studied prehistory , Roman provincial archeology , history and folklore in Kiel , Mainz and Munich . In 1968 he received his doctorate on Germanic grave finds from the 4th to 5th centuries between the lower Elbe and Loire . In 1970 he became department head at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, then in 1972 assistant, later director of the early medieval department of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum (RGZM) in Mainz.

With the great Salier exhibition in 1991, Böhme entered medieval archeology . The anthologies on rural settlements and castles that were created at that time gave research an important impetus. From 1992 until his retirement in 2005 he was Professor of Early History and Medieval Archeology at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Böhme is a member of the German Archaeological Institute , the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Castle Association and the Historical Commission for Hesse .
