Career

Borcherding began his career as a handball goalkeeper at Eintracht Osnabrück and joined the soccer team in 1948. Two years later he rose with the Osnabrückers in the first-class Oberliga Nord at the time. For two years, Borcherding guarded the Eintracht goal for the team from the Neustadt district in the league and came up with 37 missions for the "yellow" from the stadium on Brinkstrasse. In the second league round, 1951/52, he guarded the Eintracht goal in the 2-2 home draw against the northern series champions Hamburger SV on October 2, 1951. In 1952 he moved to Saarland to Saar 05 Saarbrücken , which had just been promoted to the Oberliga Südwest . The sporting highlight was fourth place in the 1953/54 season when he played all 30 league games alongside teammates such as Fritz Altmeyer (19 goals), Horst Lebefromm (19 goals) and Helmut Fottner (7 goals). Borcherding played 114 times for Saarbrücken until 1956 before returning to his hometown. This time, however, he joined Eintracht's local rivals VfL Osnabrück . With the team from Bremer Brücke , the goalkeeper finished third in the rounds of 1959/60 and 1960/61 behind champions Hamburger SV and vice Werder Bremen. In the 1959/60 round, VfL and goalkeeper Borcherding received the fewest goals against in the Northern League. The top performers in the field included players like Walter Bensmann , Manfred Paschke , Theo Schönhöft and Erwin Türk . On June 21, 1958, he won the NFV Cup with VfL with a 3-2 win against Hamburger SV ; Paschke stood out as a two-time goalscorer. In the summer of 1963 Borcherding had to end his career due to injury. For VfL, he completed 140 league games.

On September 26, 1954 Borcherding made his debut in the Saarland national team in the game against Yugoslavia , which was lost 5-1. This was followed by further missions on May 1, 1956 against Switzerland (1: 1) and in the last international match of the Saar selection on June 6, 1956 in the Netherlands (2: 3). The goalkeeper of the Saar selection was Erwin Strempel .
