Horst Prinzbach
Horst Prinzbach (born July 20, 1931 in Haslach im Kinzigtal ; † September 18, 2012 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German chemist and university professor.
Scientific career
Prinzbach studied chemistry at the University of Freiburg and received his doctorate from Arthur Lüttringhaus . He then continued his studies at Yale University with William von Eggers Doering . He completed his habilitation in 1962 at the University of Freiburg with the topic "Sesquifulvalene - a contribution to the chemistry of 'non-benzoid aromatics'". In 1965, Prinzbach was offered a chair in organic chemistry at the University of Lausanne . In 1969 he was appointed full professor of organic chemistry at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .
Main research areas
Organic chemistry , photochemistry with unusual chromophores , synthesis of novel carba / hetera cage systems, radical cations, dications, total synthesis of aminoglycoside antibiotics, enzymes in organic synthesis.
The Pagodan route for the synthesis of dodecahedrane stands out from the multitude of research topics , in the course of which the phenomenon of σ-bishomoaromaticity as an extreme case of chemical bonding was discovered and studied. The end point of the long-term work on the chemistry of dodecahedrane was the preparation and characterization of C20 fullerene in the gas phase starting from highly brominated dodecahedrane derivatives.
Honors
- Adolf von Baeyer commemorative coin of the Society of German Chemists (1989)
- Honorary citizen of the city of Haslach in the Kinzigtal
Prinzbach Cultural Foundation
With his “Prinzbach Cultural Foundation”, Horst Prinzbach made the establishment of the “House of Music” in his hometown Haslach possible. The music school Offenburg / Ortenau (Haslach branch) and the Haslach town band have their classrooms and rehearsal rooms in the “House of Music”. It is also the venue for concerts with regional ensembles and bands of different musical styles.
