Horst Schuster

Horst Schuster (born June 1, 1930 in Dresden ; † July 19, 2013 ) was a German typographer , book designer and university professor .

Teaching and studying

Schuster completed an eight-year apprenticeship and assistant in the technical and managerial areas of two large graphic companies. After initially self-taught book design, he studied externally from 1960 to 1965 at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig , among others with Albert Kapr and Walter Schiller .

Creative work

From 1952 to 1977 he was employed as a manufacturer at Verlag der Kunst Dresden, from 1959 as production manager and from 1965 as artistic and technical manager. His area of ​​responsibility here included the design and technical implementation of the entire book, portfolio and calendar production. Schuster was able to work with many well-known authors and artists on an object-related basis, such as FH Ehmcke, John Heartfield , Josef Hegenbarth , Albert Kapr , Werner Klemke , Sophie Lissitzky-Küppers , Jan Tschichold and others. a. During this time, the Verlag der Kunst achieved a top position among the GDR publishers with its editions in national and international book art competitions and received the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig in 1974 . At the same time, the company's publishing achievement under the editing of Erhard Frommhold was recognized, which was expressed in numerous thematic first publications and led to co-productions worldwide. From 1962 Schuster also took on design tasks for other publishers, such as the Reclam Verlag Leipzig, Edition Leipzig, Henschelverlag Berlin, Union Verlag Berlin , Verlag Volk und Welt Berlin, Sandstein Verlag Dresden, Verlag SchumacherGebler Dresden and Munich, the Dresden State Art Collections and other museums and galleries.

Horst Schuster has designed over 350 books, catalogs, portfolios and posters.

Awards

84 of the books designed by Horst Schuster ranked among the most beautiful of their kind in national and international book art competitions. In 1977 he received the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig for his book art work , and in 2000 the Art Prize of the State Capital Dresden .

Teaching

From 1978 to 1996 Schuster held a teaching post at the Dresden University of Fine Arts and headed the writing / typography / graphic workshops department, and from 1991 the newly established visual communication department . In 1979 Schuster was appointed lecturer with artistic teaching activities, in 1983 professor, 1991 professor of the New Law and 1992 professor of typography and book design. From 1991 to 1993, in addition to his teaching duties, he held the office of Vice Rector and during the university renewal 1992–1993 he was the acting rector of the university.

Juror activity

Horst Schuster was a member of the jury of many national and international book art competitions, secretary of the main jury at the International Book Art Exhibition in Leipzig in 1977 and 1982. In 1989 he headed the IBA's typography competition.
