Horst Werner Stumpf (born October 23, 1940 in Klagenfurt ; † January 16, 2006 there ) was an Austrian tire designer and inventor , university professor and painter .

Life

As a teenager, Stumpf was particularly interested in painting, but also worked as a sailor for the Wörtersee shipping company. From 1959 to 1967 he studied shipbuilding and marine engineering at the Vienna University of Technology, now the Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna). During his studies he worked as a contract teacher at the vocational school for motor vehicle mechanics in Vienna and as a test engineer at the shipbuilding research institute in Vienna.

From 1967 to 1994 - temporarily interrupted by service in the armed forces (1968–1969, first lieutenant in the higher military technical service) and an assistant position at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1970–1971) - Stumpf worked at Semperit , most recently as head of development for passenger cars , Bicycle and moped tires, as well as tubes and heating bellows. He then headed the development of summer car tires for Continental AG for the brands Continental, Semperit, Uniroyal, Barum, General Tire , Sava , Gislaved, Vicking, Mabor and for seven private brands until 1996 . From 1996 he ran a tire laboratory (chemical laboratory and technical office in the field of mechanical engineering) and continued the activity he began in 1970 as a sworn court expert for the specialist field of rubber (especially tires).

From 1993 Stumpf worked as a lecturer at the Vienna University of Technology and at the Graz University of Technology . In 1996 he completed his doctorate in technical sciences at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology and completed his habilitation there in 1997. From 1998 to 2002 he was a professor at the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Graz and headed the Automotive Engineering course.

Stumpf was considered a pioneer in tire development, which in 1990 led to the award of the professional title of professor and the nickname "tire professor" or "tire pope". In 2003, Stumpf founded the “Tires and Chassis” symposium at the Vienna University of Technology, which has been continued by the ÖAMTC “in memory of Horst Stumpf” since the 5th tire symposium in 2007.

Stumpf learned the painting craft in Klagenfurt from Sepp Schmölzer and Carlo Kos. He showed his landscape watercolors and figurative watercolors as well as egg tempera in exhibitions in Austria. In addition, Stumpf was involved as a proponent of "art (in) work".

  • 1995: Award for the Light-Weight Tire Concept by The Tire Society.
  • 2001: Award of the title of University Professor by the Austrian University of Applied Sciences Conference (FHK).
