Horwagen is a district of the Bad Steben market in the Upper Franconian district of Hof in northern Bavaria .
location
The village is located in the middle of the Franconian Forest Nature Park , south of the center of Bad Steben. On the southern outskirts of the village a nameless brook rises in a pond and flows further north into the Lohbach, a source brook of the Selbitz .
Connecting roads lead to Bobengrün , Gerlas and State Road 2198 .
history
The Horwagen marble quarry started operations in 1882 . The quarry operation ceased in the early 1990s. Horwagen was part of the former municipality of Bobengrün before it was incorporated into Bad Steben as part of the municipal reform in 1978.
Attractions
In June 2005 the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment awarded the Horwagen marble quarry the seal of approval “Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes ”. Flaserkalk, known under the trade name Deutsch-Rot , had been mined there until the beginning of the 1990s .
