Bobengrün is a village in the administrative region of Upper Franconia in northeast Bavaria . Since 1978 it has been part of the Bad Steben market in the Hof district . The village is known nationwide, especially in Christian circles, thanks to the annual open-air Whitsun conference in the forest near Bobengrün.
geography
The place is in the middle of the Franconian Forest Nature Park , embedded in the valley of the Lohbach and the Bobengrüner Bach at the foot of the 729 meter high Spitzberg. It has a low mountain range climate free from foehn .
history
Between 1050 and 1300 the Counts of Orlamünde colonized the area around Lichtenberg . Bobengrün was probably created during this time. It was first mentioned on June 6, 1410 in a document from Count Oswald von Truhendingen . Between 1427 and 1432, Count Sigismund von Weimar-Orlamünde sold the Lichtenberg rule and thus also Bobengrün to the von Waldenfels . Almost 200 years later they sold the Thierbach estate due to high debts to the Margraviate Bayreuth, to which Bobengrün belonged until 1791. After the last margrave resigned, Bobengrün came under Prussian administration. In 1807, after a defeat by the Prussian army , Bobengrün fell to France. Almost three years later, Napoleon ceded the former principality of Bayreuth with the Paris Treaty ; Bobengrün became Bavarian .
In 1831 there were 36 houses, a mill and a brick hut in the village. There were 297 inhabitants. In 1855 there were already 570. At that time the community included the places Bobengrün, Horwagen and Gerlas as well as the wasteland Erlaburg . Christ green and brickworks were added later . The first school building was built in 1861. The Horwagen marble quarry began operations in 1882 and was closed in the early 1990s. The new school and town hall was built in 1911/1912.
The Protestant St. Paulus Church was built in 1961/1962. Bobengrün has been Kirchdorf since then . In 1978 the municipality of Bobengrün was incorporated into Bad Steben as part of the municipal reform. At that time, 725 people lived in the village.
Population development
In 1783, 335 people lived in Bobengrün. Around 100 years later (1885) there were already 600. By 1933 the population rose to 665, in 1946 916 inhabitants were counted. In 1960 there were 785 inhabitants. In the mid-1980s, including second residences, over 800 residents were registered; currently there are 492.

Regular events
The largest event in Bobengrün is the Whitsun conference of the YMCA in Froschbachtal . Every year on the weekend of Pentecost, a large number of Christians come to the Frankenwalddorf to camp here, to experience Christian community together and to gather in the middle of the forest during the YMCA conference, to celebrate together, to sing, to pray and to give Christian speeches to listen. The event, which has been taking place since 1946, has around 10,000 visitors annually and, as an open-air event, has the character of a Christian festival . Theologically it tends to be close to pietism and the revival movement .
In addition to the big Whitsun event, there are other smaller celebrations in Bobengrün. Numerous club festivals are held every year, e.g. B. the fire brigade festival and the fountain festival. The parish fair is traditionally celebrated on the third weekend in October.
