Howard Petrie

Howard Alexander Petrie (born November 22, 1906 in Beverly , Massachusetts , † March 24, 1968 in Keene , New Hampshire ) was an American radio announcer and film and television actor .

Life

When he was three years old, he and his family moved to Concord, Massachusetts . The Petrie family later lived in Arlington, Massachusetts, and then in Somerville, Massachusetts , where Howard graduated from high school. As a talented musician, he headed the local men's choir at his high school, where he played various musical instruments. After graduating from Somerville High School in 1924, he worked briefly as a banker and securities dealer.

During a sales pitch on a radio station, his sonorous bass voice brought him a job at the local Boston radio station WBZ in 1929, where he made his debut as a junior announcer. After 10 months in the WBZ studios, Petrie moved to New York in June 1930, where he was now part of the team for the National Broadcasting Company . He managed to establish himself as the chief spokesperson for many radio shows early on. His first major moderation was Everything Goes ( with Garry Moore). While at NBC, he met his future wife, Alice Wood. She was also employed there between 1931 and 1936. The Petries had a son.

In 1943, the Petrie couple moved to California , where Howard was entrusted with the moderation of the Judy Canova show. In 1947 a film producer who was looking for a big, strong man for a film role saw Petrie on the stage of his station and offered him the role. With a height of 1.93 meters and 120 kilograms he played “big man roles” from now on, he appeared particularly often as a supporting actor in westerns such as Mutiny on the Serpent River or Star of the Law . Petrie also regularly took on guest roles on US television.

In the early 1960s, the eclectic character actor retired from acting to run a gift shop in New Hampshire with his wife. He died in 1968 at the age of 61 and was buried in the Worcester Rural Cemetery in Worcester , Massachusetts.
