The Posavina horse ( Croatian Posavski konj or Posavski bušak ), also Croatian Posavac ( Hrvatski posavac [ ˈpɔːsaʋats ]) or Turopolje horse , is a horse breed originating from Croatia . This cold blood horse breed comes from the Posavina , a region around the Sava River in central Croatia and Slavonia , in close proximity to the Turopolje region.

Measured by its population , the Posavina horse, together with the Croatian draft horse , is the most important horse breed in Croatia. Thanks to its good qualities, the horse has also been adopted by numerous breeders from the Posavje region in Slovenia .

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The Posavina horse has a not too long neck, dry, characteristically wide nostrils and extremely clear eyes, as well as small, pointed ears. The neck lies close to the body, is short and well-formed with a firm mane. The horse has a strong trunk, which is equally pronounced in all three parts. It has a steeply sloping croup and a rich tail . The legs are relatively dry with a short shin and an upright posture. The fur colors predominate in red-brown, mostly darker than lighter. The horse also appears as a black horse , somewhat less often than gray mold or fox . A spotty coat is not desirable in breeding.

interior

The Posavina horse is a sturdy draft animal of solid constitution, has a good and calm character. It was once used for train services in forests and arable farming. The Posavac is an early maturing breed in good health and long lifespan. The horse has a balanced character, has a strong will and is persistent at work. It is very frugal and very easy to feed in terms of feeding effort. The horse is kept in the meadows from the first months of spring to the late autumn months, in winter it is kept in the stable and fed with hay and corn on the cob.

Breeding history

When the Croatians came from the steppes of Eurasia to what is now Croatia many centuries ago , they also brought their horses with them. In this area of constant clash between the civilizations of the East and the West, great empires and their armies, or the heavy European war horse on the one hand and the easy-moving oriental horse on the other, this breed of horse had to adapt to the circumstances (see also military border ) . This is the basis on which today's breeding of the Croatian Posavac is based. The people created this type of horse as a specific type of horse under the influence of the geographical conditions in Croatia and the pastures of the Posavina area.

A rare white Posavac horse

Once the breeding area of the horse breed comprised the area from Zagreb to Županja with the numerous fertile meadows and fields next to the Sava. Today the breeding area covers the section from Zagreb to Nova Gradiška . This horse breed has been systematically selected and controlled since 1991 and a register is kept of the number of horses available. In 2013 a total of 5131 Posavac horses were registered in Croatia.
