Hubert Gordon Schauer (born October 27, 1862 in Rudoltice , † July 26, 1892 in Hory near Česká Třebová ) was a Czech publicist and literary critic .

Life

Schauer, who came from a German-Czech family, attended the German school. During his studies in Litomysl , he joined the Czech movement . In 1882 he studied law , philosophy , German and Romance languages in Vienna . From 1886 he worked at Ottův slovník naučný . He also wrote several articles for the magazines Čas ( Time ), Athenaeum and Národní listy . He died at the age of almost 30 from complications from severe tuberculosis .

Works

Schauer was one of the founders and representatives of Česká moderna . Together with Vilém Mrštík and František Xaver Šalda , he published the almanac Vpád barbarů ( Invasion of the Barbarians ) in 1888 . As a critic, he was also part of the realistic movement of the 1880s. His articles on questions of Czech culture and society were skeptical. He was concerned with the question of whether the Czech nation had reached the cultural heights that could contribute to the enrichment of world culture. If this is to be answered in the negative, it should be examined whether the nation should not join the strong German culture. His considerations were described as philosophical national suicide, especially by supporters of the Czech movement such as the Mladočeši ( Young Czechs ).
