Hubert Herkommer

Hubert Herkommer (born January 17, 1941 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a German philologist .

Life

After childhood in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Herkommer studied German , history and political science at the Universities of Tübingen and Bonn from 1960 and completed his studies with a state examination for higher education in 1966 in Bonn. He then took a position as a research assistant to Karl Stackmann , under whom he received his doctorate in 1969 with a faculty award at the University of Göttingen and for whom he took over a professorship in 1973 .

From 1971 to 1972 briefly worked as an academic advisor at the University of Göttingen, Herkommer was appointed to the chair for German and Medieval Studies in Kassel, where he remained until 1977. During his time at the University of Kassel he was dean of the language and literature department from 1973 to 1974 and from 1976 to 1977 he was a representative of the University of Kassel in the specialist committee for the reorganization of the examination system in the state of Hesse .

In 1977 followed the appointment at the University of Bern to the Chair of Germanic Philology . From 1980 to 1989 Herkommer was a member of the planning group for the philosophical-historical faculty, whose dean he provided from 1982 to 1983. In addition, he held from 1985 to 1996 the Office of the President of Vortragedienstes the deanery Bern City and took over in the winter semester 1987/88, the Acting Chair for Heinz Rupp at the University of Basel and in the summer semester 1988 and winter semester 1988/89, the Acting Chair for Eduard Studer at of the University of Freiburg im Üechtland . In the same year, Herkommer became President of the Research Commission of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW) and a member of the board of this academy. He held these positions until 1992. From 1991 to 1999, Herkommer assumed the position of Vice President of the Administration of the City Theater Bern . From 1992 to 2004 he was also Research Councilor of the Swiss National Science Foundation in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2002 he was appointed Vice President of the Seniors University of Bern . He held the office until his retirement in 2006.

After his retirement he moved back to his hometown Schwäbisch Gmünd, where he does a variety of voluntary work, for example, he is the deputy chairman of the Münsterbauverein for the city's Heilig-Kreuz-Münster and chairman of its action committee. He is also considered one of the visionaries of the Staufer saga , a play that was staged with 1300 actors as part of the city anniversary of Schwäbisch Gmünd.
