biography

Hugh Nibley was born in Portland, Oregon to Alexander Nibley and Agnes Sloan. At the age of 17, Nibley served as a missionary in Germany for two and a half years. From 1927 to 1930, Nibley's memoirs report that an apostle called on missionaries to warn Germans to repent or be burned by fire. A woman in Karlsruhe got so angry with Nibley that she chased him with a butcher knife when he told her about this prophecy. When Nibley returned to Germany in 1945, he saw many cities destroyed, even the butcher's shop, from which the woman got her knife.

Nibley was in the University of California, Los Angeles , and became in 1938 at the University of California, Berkeley , the Ph.D. with the grade summa cum laude.

During World War II , he served in the US Army in the 101st Airborne Division (United States) as a Master Sergeant .

After returning home from the war, he married Phyllis Draper in September 1946. The couple had eight children.

At the request of the Apostle John A. Widtsoe , he became a professor at Brigham Young University in 1946, teaching history, languages and religion. He resigned from his position in 1975 and continued to work as a professor emeritus until 1994. He continued to work on his masterpiece on the book of Abraham , which he named One Eternal Round .

For the last two years of his life he was bedridden by illness. He died on February 24, 2005, at the age of 94, at his Provo home . At the end of 2002 he donated his last work to the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies . His daughter Martha Beck accused him of sexual abuse. However, Nibley and his other sons and daughters firmly rejected Martha's allegations.

Social and Political Views

Nibley was an active democrat and environmentalist who often criticized the decisions of the Republican Party . He was a staunch opponent of the Vietnam War and in his book Approaching Zion he criticizes capitalism and socialism .

Nibley also criticized Brigham Young University's code of honor regarding hairstyles and clothing.

Nibley also criticized the acceptance of kitsch about high art in Mormon culture and the demolition of buildings of the pioneers.

Scientific work

Nibley is one of the most influential Mormon apologists , along with BH Roberts . His work was praised by Protestant scholars Mosser and Owen. Nibley carried out research on ancient Egyptian, Hebrew and early Christian history. He recorded his results in a form of shorthand . Nibley understood many languages and insisted on reading the relevant primary and secondary sources in the original. A colleague at BYU said of him that he studies more comparative literature than history. His methodology on the subject of Enoch has been scientifically studied.

Nibley also wrote about the temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , Enoch, and similarities between Gnostic and Mormon beliefs. He also commented on the book No Man Knows My History . He wrote many scientific articles. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the Roman Festival. His work has been published in the magazines: Classical Journal , Western Political Quarterly , Western Speech , Jewish Quarterly Review, Church History, Revue de Qumran, Vigililae Christianae, The Historian, The American Political Science Review, and the Encyclopaedia Judaica . Perhaps his most controversial essay was "The Passing of the Church: Forty Variations on an Unpopular Theme," from 1961. He researched translations for some important Arabic and Egyptian words.

criticism

Some scholars criticized Nibley for misinterpreting the sources and citing them badly. Shirley S. Ricks defended him on these points. It was also written about Nibley that he “has the quality of seeing that large and whole” and that he “uses the sources very well”.

Nibley has also been criticized for taking the evidence from far-flung cultures and eras for no reason. Nibley is accused of discovering parallels between the Book of Mormon and other ancient texts that have no historical basis.
