Hughes brothers
Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes (born April 1, 1972 in Detroit , Michigan ) are American film directors , screenwriters and producers . The pair of twins are best known for directing Menace II Society and From Hell .
Life
Albert and Allen Hughes were born to an African American father and an Armenian mother named Aida. When the Hughes brothers were two years old, the parents separated and the father left the family. The mother moved to Pomona , California with her sons when the children were nine years old. On their 12th birthday, their mother gave the brothers a video camera with which they could gather their first filming experiences. From then on, Albert and Allen spent their free time together making short films. In the 11th grade, Albert, nine minutes older, left secondary school and took lessons at the film school "The Los Angeles Film School".
Career
The brothers made their first film, Menace II Society , at the age of 21. The film is about everyday life in the American ghettos and won the prize for best film at the 1994 MTV Movie Awards . Their second film, Dead Presidents , is the Hughes brothers' most unsuccessful film to date. Four years later, the documentary American Pimp was released . The second most successful film of the twin brothers was the comic book adaptation From Hell with Johnny Depp in the leading role. It is based on the comic novel From Hell .
Their latest joint project is the post-apocalyptic sci-fi - action film The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman , the financially more successful than From Hell is. So far it has grossed around US $ 157 million, but the 2001 thriller only reached around US $ 74 million.
Allan Hughes directed Broken City in 2013 and Albert Hughes made his directorial debut in 2018 with Alpha .
