Life

Hartmann was born in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871 in Rosenberg in West Prussia (today Susz in Poland ). When his father died in 1875 as a result of a serious war injury, his mother moved with him to relatives in Berlin . Because of a protracted illness of his mother, he grew up there in the family of his uncle, his father's brother. Hartmann attended elementary school in Berlin and, until 1886, high school.

He made the decision to become a painter early on, and in 1890 was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden . Hartmann studied there until 1896, initially with Friedrich Preller the Younger , and finally in Gotthardt Kuehl's master class . He then settled in the Lower Saxony town of Bardowick , which he had met on a study trip to the academy. From 1900 he was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 ; after 1903 also in the German Association of Artists .

Until his death, Hartmann lived and worked secluded in Bardowick, where he initially lived with a friend for a long time and had his studio. In 1934 he moved into his own house with a studio. In 1940 he married Hilde Molsen; In 1942 the daughter Gudrun was born.

In addition, he created large-format murals in the Lüneburg and Stade stations , in the Lüneburg Ratskeller and in the former Lüneburg Schlieffen barracks .

As a North German Impressionist, Hartmann was widely recognized during his lifetime, while his work is little known today.
