Karl Hugo Kronecker (born January 27, 1839 in Liegnitz , † June 6, 1914 in Bad Nauheim ) was a German physiologist . He is the brother of the mathematician Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891).

Life

Kronecker came from an educated and wealthy Jewish merchant family and studied medicine in Berlin , Heidelberg and Pisa from 1859 . In the winter semester of 1859/60 he became a member of the Allemannia Heidelberg fraternity . He completed his studies in 1863 with a doctorate in medicine on muscle fatigue with Emil Heinrich du Bois-Reymond in Berlin. Then worked as an assistant at Ludwig Traube and Wilhelm Kühne .

In 1868 he went to the Physiological Institute of the University of Leipzig , headed by Carl Ludwig , where he became Ludwig's assistant in 1871 as a medical officer after participating in the Franco-German War . After his habilitation in 1872 he became a private lecturer and from 1875 an associate professor in Leipzig . From 1877 he was associate professor in Berlin and head of the institute for physiology there .

From 1884 to 1914, he succeeded Paul Grützner as a full professor of physiology at the University of Bern , where he was rector from 1894–95. He dealt with altitude sickness and in 1894 prepared the medical report for the construction of the Jungfrau Railway . In 1901 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences . On October 29, 1902 ( matriculation no. 3152 ) he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
