Johann Christoph Ludwig Hugo Hercules Staehle (* 21st June 1826 in Fulda , † 29. March 1848 in Kassel ) was a German composer of the Romantic .

Life

Staehle was the son of an officer in the Hessian army . In Kassel he first received piano lessons from Wilhelm Deichert , a student of Louis Spohr . From 1839 Moritz Hauptmann taught him (until he moved to Leipzig in 1842 when he took over the Thomaskantorat ) in music theory and composition, while Louis Spohr gave him violin lessons. From 1842 he also became a student of Spohr in composition, with whom he also lived temporarily. Spohr supported him in the following years by performing various compositions. Staehle also stayed in Leipzig in the autumn and winter months of 1843/44 and 1844/45, where, in addition to Hauptmann, he also took lessons from Ferdinand David and the pianist Louis Plaidy . Among other things, he heard an opera there under the direction of Richard Wagner and made the acquaintance of Clara and Robert Schumann as well as Niels Gade . Back in Kassel he completed his great three-act opera Arria , which was also successfully performed at the Kassel Court Theater in 1847 under Spohr's direction. Staehle died in 1848 at the age of 22 from meningitis .

His most important works are his symphony in C minor (1844) and his piano quartet in A major (1847).
