Hugo Wolf (revolutionary)
Hugo Wolf (* 1830 in Müllheim im Breisgau ; † 1900 in Mosbach ) was a German doctor who participated as a student in the Baden Revolution in 1849 in the 1st contingent of the Neckargemünder vigilante group . After graduating from high school in 1849, he studied medicine and became a practicing doctor. In 1898 he wrote an autobiographical work.
Life
Hugo Wolf was born in Müllheim im Breisgau in 1830 as the son of pastors Franz Phillip Wolf and Emilie Wolf. He had several siblings. In 1832 the family moved to Gaiberg , where the father took over the pastor's office. Wolf attended elementary school there. He first attended high school in Frankfurt am Main and stayed with his maternal aunt. Wolf described life in his aunt's household as extremely uncomfortable. With a renewed transfer of his father to Neckargemünd, Wolf attended the Heidelberg Lyceum from then on , today's Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium , which he left with the Abitur in 1849.
At the behest of his father, he began to study medicine in Heidelberg, which he graduated as a surgeon in 1854 . He then took a position in Aglasterhausen , but moved to Mosbach in 1860 , as the village of Aglasterhausen did not suit him. In the course of the German Wars of Unification , he took care of medical care for soldiers and was awarded the War Medal of the Grand Duke of Baden in 1871 .
In 1857 he married Bertha, b. Schwab, with whom he had six children.
Baden Revolution 1849
As an adult, obliged but against the will of his parents, Wolf joined the first contingent of the Neckargemünder vigilante group in May 1849. After a lot of drills were initially carried out in Heidelberg , the vigilante groups were soon brought to Mannheim , where they joined forces with other troops. Wolf was chosen to be the Fourier of the Neckargemünder company and so met the Hungarian commander Stephan Türr .
Wolf attended General Mieroslawski's troop parade in Mannheim before taking part in combat operations with Prussian counterrevolutionary troops in Ludwigshafen . However, the revolutionaries were pushed back over the bridge to Mannheim. In the turmoil, Wolf lost his good friend Cassmann, whom he suspected to be in a pontoon of the destroyed bridge. The daring attempt to save him under enemy fire was prevented by Türr.
A few days later, Wolf took the train back to Heidelberg and from there to Neckargemünd. At home he slept as his mother disposed of his uniform and weapons early in the morning. Participation in the revolution therefore had no consequences for him.
At the end of his autobiography, Hugo Wolf distances himself from his “republican inclinations” in his youth, but describes himself politically as “always national and liberal”.
