Ernst Georg Hugo vom Hagen , also von Hagen , (born April 20, 1856 in Colônia Dona Francisca, Santa Catarina , Brazil , † November 26, 1913 in Hermsdorf near Berlin ) was a German officer and aerial photographer .

His father was the German Freiherr Friedrich Josef vom Hagen (1827–1885), who was born in Stuttgart and who emigrated to America. He was in the Prussian military service. a. as the author of numerous articles on aeronautics and was largely responsible for the success of the German Association for the Promotion of Airship Travel.

Hugo Freiherr vom Hagen continued his father's work. From 1884 to 1887 he was a lieutenant in the Royal Prussian Airship Department in Berlin and in 1884 together a. a. with Georg von Tschudi and Hermann Moedebeck founding member of the Royal Prussian Balloon Detachment , the later airship department , which u. a. Performed climbing attempts on the Tempelhofer Feld . He experimented with taking photos from the basket of tethered and free balloons , attaching pivoting cameras to the gondola. He took pictures from heights of 600 to 1000 m and managed to create distortion-free top views. His aerial photographs from 1886 were the first in Germany.

After his time in the aeronautical department , he became a teacher at the military gymnasium and reached the rank of captain à la suite in the hunter battalion Graf Yorck von Wartenberg .

In May 1902 he was a member of the International Commission for Scientific Airship Travel, the Photographisches Verein zu Berlin and the German Association for the Promotion of Airship Travel, where he also gave lectures.

From October 2019 to January 2020 you can see the first aerial photo in the Märkisches Museum as part of the Fontanes Berlin exhibition.

Hugo vom Hagen was married to Wilhelmine Marie Emma Wilhelmi (1863–1940) for the first time since 1882. The wedding took place in Diedenhofen , Alsace , where his son was born. Shortly before his death, he married a second time.
