The human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) is a coronavirus that can infect humans and bats . The virus has an envelope and, as genetic material, a strand of single-stranded RNA of positive polarity . The host cell becomes infected by binding to an APN receptor. With the human coronavirus OC43 (to Betacoronavirus 1 ), the human coronavirus NL63 and the human coronavirus HKU1 , the human coronavirus 229E is one of the viruses that can cause a common cold . The species belongs to the family Coronaviridae , the subfamily Orthocoronavirinae (formerly Coronavirinae ) and the subgenus Duvinacovirus .
The virus was first detected in 1965 by Dorothy Hamre at the University of Chicago . In rare cases, severe lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia and bronchiolitis , can also occur, particularly in infants, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. The virus is also found in bats, from which it is believed to have spread to humans.
