action

Andrea and Klaus live with their grandmother all year round, as their parents work as skippers on a motor cargo ship on the Elbe . Now that they are on vacation, they can go on the ship for a few weeks because there is also an apartment on it. The ship's crew also includes a boatman who immediately has a queasy feeling when the children arrive, as the dog Jackie is also with them. There is a tense relationship between the children and the boatswain from the start, especially when he accidentally tips over a red can and Andreas' favorite doll Karoline falls into it with her face.

One day, in an unobserved moment, the dog falls into the water. An oncoming Czechoslovak tug brings him on board, where he immediately makes friends among the crew members. You decide to hand over the dog on the way back. In the meantime, the disappearance of Jackie is noticed on the freight ship and the family decides to anchor to look for him on land. Of course they can't find him. But that night Klaus has the idea to look for him on the other bank and he sets off with his little sister. While searching through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains , they get lost and cannot find their way back to the ship. The next day, the absence of the children is found here too, and the adults go on a search, also with the help of the Czechoslovak police.

Looking for the way back, Andrea and Klaus are arrested by a group of Indians playing Czechoslovak children. Since they don't understand each other's language, they manage to communicate using sign language. The Indians realize that the German children are looking for a dog and the way to the ship. They make friends and bring all the dogs in the area to be checked. The parents and the boatswain have also arrived and Jäckie's whereabouts have been clarified.

On the way back, the siblings meet the tugboat with the dog on board. But at the handover, Jackie falls into the water again, but the boatswain immediately jumps after him and saves him. That is the reason to make an Indian friendship with the boatswain, how it works, you have learned in the meantime.
