The Hundstein is a 2157 m above sea level. M. high mountain peaks in Alpsteinmassiv in the Appenzell Alps . It is located in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden . It is best known among climbers for its south face.
location
The Hundstein is located in the middle of the three ridges of the Alpstein, about five kilometers east of the Säntis and about 2.8 km east-northeast of the main summit of this ridge, the Altmann . Its direct neighbor to the west is freedom, from which it is separated by the Höll, a deeply cut gorge. To the east are the Widderalpstöck at the foot of which the Hundsteinhütte ( 1551 m above sea level ) is located. To the south it falls in a steep wall around 700 meters to the Fälensee . In the upper part of this south wall has two pronounced bellies that shape a striking silhouette. Further down, when the wall flattens out a bit, the Rot Turm ( 2002 m above sea level ), a steep, pointed rock tooth protrudes from the wall, which is seen as an independent summit.
Climbing opportunities
The normal ascent leads over a marked mountain hiking trail. The starting point is the Bollenwees mountain inn ( 1470 m above sea level ) on Lake Fälensee , which can be reached from Brülisau in two hours and from Sax via the Saxer Lücke in three hours. The route leads over the Hundsteinhütte, below the south walls of the Widderalpstöck, over two steps to the summit.
Paul Hell and Paul Schafflützel made the first ascent of the south wall on August 8, 1937. The seven pitch (SL) long tour is the most popular south face climb with difficulties up to 5c (4b mandatory) .
The boundary edges of the south wall (southeast edge and southwest edge) were first climbed in the 1940s . In the 1960s, the first ascent of the striking south wall bellies took place in technical climbing . Other routes through the south face are the direct south face (6a +, 8 SL), the south intersection (5c +, 6 SL) and the thunderbolt (6b, 7 SL). The route La liberté d'être heureux , which was first started in July 1996, is one of the most difficult climbing tours in the entire Alpstein with difficulties up to 7c.
