history

The area of today's Hurley has been inhabited for centuries by the Esopus , an Indian tribe of the Lenni Lenape . In 1662 Dutch businessmen reached the region and at the suggestion of Peter Stuyvesant founded a settlement next to the town of Wiltwijk (later Kingston ). The new settlement was initially named Nieu Dorp (New Village). In the Esopus Wars , the Indians attacked Nieu Dorp in 1663 , feeling that they had been treated ruthlessly by the newcomers, destroyed houses and took women and children hostage , who were later released. After the English took over the region, Nieu Dorp was renamed "Hurley" because the ancestors of the Lovelace families, who also had two governors of the province of New York , came from the city of Hurley in England . At the beginning of the 1700s, the inhabitants began to use the region more for agriculture, founded several smaller businesses and built massive houses ( stone houses ). Then more settlers came to the place. In 1777 Hurley developed into a military headquarters for the British and briefly became the seat of government for the province of New York. After the Civil War were limestone deposits discovered and established a cement industry . In addition, a rock containing copper sulphate , the so-called "blue stone", was processed. This industry produced until around 1900. Periods of changing economic successes followed.

Today, Hurley is a rather quiet residential area with an old center and larger sweet corn farms in the area. Most of the historic stone houses are privately owned, but are opened to the public on the annual Stone House Day.
