The Hurst is a ridge on the northern edge of the Lange Feld , which stretches westward from Asperg between Andelbach in the north and Riedbach or Leudelsbach in the south. The ridge belongs partly to the Tammer , partly to the Asperger and mostly to the Markgröninger district. Due to the ongoing development, the settlement of the same name on the Hurst, about one kilometer from the outskirts of Markgröningen, now looks like an independent district.

Geography and history

Archaeological finds on the ridge of the Hurst indicate prehistoric settlement . The road from Grüningen to Asperg ran on the ridge to Hohenasperg fortress until the 18th century , part of which still exists as the “Oberer Hurstweg” field path. The "Untere Hurstweg", today also a dirt road, made the connection to the church square of Unterasperg , formerly Weihenberg . In 1763, the two road connections were replaced by the construction of a " road " through the reed south of the Hurst.

The undeveloped areas of the Hurst are part of the Hohenasperg-Hurst landscape protection area and the surrounding area . Its north-facing slope is still characterized by orchards today. The south-facing slope was previously mostly occupied by vineyards. Today there are only a few left. Some have been converted into orchards and weekend lots. Many had to give way to the expansion of Asperg to the west and the development on Markgröninger Markung that began in the 19th century. It started with a “rural poor institution” with an estate, which was converted into a home for the disabled by the State Welfare Association and supplemented in 1960 by a school for physically handicapped children. In 1975 a new school wing was inaugurated and handed over to the state of Baden-Württemberg as the new school authority as the "State School for the Physically Disabled with Boarding School". In addition, the Orthopedic Clinic Markgröningen (OKM) was built and orthopedic workshops set up, which have developed into an independent company, Orthopädietechnik Markgröningen GmbH (Ortema).

The settlement on the Hurst also includes accommodation for carers, a small church and a cemetery, a large farm and its own water tower. Some of the facilities located here cover part of their energy requirements through a neighboring biogas plant and are well connected to Markgröningen and the Asperger S-Bahn station through wheelchair-accessible routes and regular, wheelchair-accessible buses . Halfway to Asperg, there is another residential area with an outbuilding at the foot of the Hurst.

Facilities on the Hurst

Home for the disabled

The Markgröningen home for handicapped people, once called “Landesheim” or “asylum” in the vernacular, was set up in 1897 as a “Landarmenanstalt” (from 1924 “Landesfürsorgeanstalt”) with a large farm for self-sufficiency for around 300 impoverished or neglected inmates from the Neckar district . During the Nazi rule, the home was affected by their " Action T4 ". Today, according to the State Welfare Association (LWV), it is “an institution for care, support and advice, social and professional integration of people with physical and multiple disabilities and for people with intellectual disabilities”. They use the services of the home for the disabled “to maintain and develop their skills and to be able to lead a life with the greatest possible self-determination”. The home provides them with a wide range of forms of support in the areas of care, living, working and assistance. The building complex of the former rural poor institution is a listed building.

August Hermann Werner School

The August-Hermann-Werner-Schule accepts children with physical and motor impairments who, due to their disabilities, require special educational support: “The holistic, action-oriented teaching is based on the curriculum of the primary and secondary schools, the special needs school and the school for the mentally handicapped. ”Lessons and support are organized by a team of special school teachers, subject teachers with special educational additional training or with training in physiotherapy or occupational therapy and teaching assistants. The kindergarten children come from the Ludwigsburg district , and the students from the Rems-Murr district . Students from all over Baden-Württemberg live in the adjoining boarding school .

Orthopedic Clinic (OKM)

The Orthopädische Klinik Markgröningen gGmbH (OKM) goes back to the Werner Institutes in Ludwigsburg and is today a supraregional competence center for orthopedics and spinal cord injuries and, along with nine other clinics, belongs to the Regional Clinics Holding RKH based in Ludwigsburg. The OKM was certified as the “ Endoprosthetics Center for Maximum Care” and “is one of the few German institutions of this type in the area of the spine with the centers for spinal surgery, spinal cord injuries and scoliosis ”. The OKM has a total of around 560 employees and is divided into five clinical areas:

  1. Clinic for Anesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy,
  2. Clinic for endoprosthetics, general and rheumatic orthopedics,
  3. Clinic for Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery,
  4. Clinic for Sports Orthopedics and Arthroscopic Surgery ,
  5. Clinic for Neuroorthopedics, Spinal Cord Injuries and Scolioses.

Orthopedic technology (Ortema)

Orthopädietechnik Markgröningen GmbH (Ortema) , which emerged from the clinic's workshops , also offers a wide range of orthopedic technology as well as rehabilitation and prevention. Ortema has been growing steadily since 1993 and is now divided into the three areas of orthopedic technology , rehabilitation and medical fitness as well as sport protection for the development of protectors for high-risk sports. In August 2007, Ortema inaugurated a 2000 square meter “Center for Rehabilitation & Medical Fitness” on the Hurst.
