Huskvarnaån is a Swedish river that runs through the municipalities of Nässjö and Jönköping with a total catchment area of 664 km².

geography

The river draws its water from several lakes around Nässjö in the southern Swedish highlands and finds its way from the lake area north of Nässjö via Ryssbysjön and Stensjön past Huskvarna , from which it takes its name, to Vättern as one of its most important tributaries.

The river and the lakes through which it flows are rich in fish stocks and the area is of great importance as a spawning area, as pollution and acidification are low. There are ospreys, black-throated grebes and grebes, among others; the area serves as a resting place for waders and water birds.

As with most waterfalls, industry developed at Huskvarnafallet . First of all, a foundry called Ebbes bruk should be mentioned , later it was called Ebe-verken . Today there are residential buildings in their place. At the lower end (like Ebbes Bruk before) is Husqvarna AB with its own power station . From this power station in Stampaplan (an area in Huskvarna) the river flows in meanders in a three-kilometer run in the Vättern. Behind Smedbyn , the water of Lillån picks up and runs to Kovasjön, which was formerly used as an ice rink. It flows past Rumlaborg , a medieval town with well-preserved city walls, and flows over old and new paths to Vättern. It turns to the east, parallel to the Vättern bank and thus forms a narrow peninsula, which serves as a bathing place for Huskvarna. Historically interesting boat houses can be visited here and the route ends at the Oset bathing area, where the river flows into the lake at the old Gripenbergsbanan railway bridge , which is now part of the cycle path to Jönköping .

Huskvarnafallet

At Stensholm above Huskvarna the river forms a mighty waterfall, the Huskvarnafallet . Only on special days can you see the masses of water rushing down through the deep gorge. Usually the water flows through pipes to the Huskvarna power station. The difference in altitude is 116 meters, making it one of the highest for hydropower plants in Sweden. Below Smedbyn is easy to reach the lowest part of the case, Slipstensfallet called. Or you can take the footpath and the stairs to the famous “tourist bridge ”, which can also be reached from Ådalsvägen .

In the canyon of Huskvarnaån there are a number of glacial potholes , the post-glacial should be origin. The largest is 3.4 meters in diameter. The Jutafall has several smaller ones and there are a dozen below the tourist bridge and at the 21 meter high Slipstensfall. Not least because of this, the Huskvarnafall is part of the Swedish imperial interest , as is the river course between Ryssbysjön and Stensjön with 2390 hectares.
