The Hyūga class ( Japanese ひ ゅ う が 型 護衛艦 , Hyūga-gata goeikan ), also referred to as 16DDH class , is a class of two helicopter carriers of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF).
Out of consideration for the constitution, according to which Japan is actually not allowed to maintain armed forces, one avoids the historically charged term carrier and instead speaks officially of "helicopter destroyers " (DDH, Japanese ヘ リ コ プ タ ー 搭載 護衛艦 , herikoputā tōsai goeikan , the Japanese term for "Destroyer" literally means "escort ship").
history
Development and construction
The Hyūga , named after the historic Hyūga Province , and the Ise , named after the historic province Ise , the two replaced from the 70s derived helicopter destroyer of Haruna class ( Haruna (DDH 141) and Heii (DDH-142) ). They were the largest warships of the Japanese self-defense forces until the launch of the type ship of the subsequent Izumo class .
Both ships were on the yard of IHI Marine United in Yokohama built. The Hyūga was laid on May 11, 2006 and the Ise on May 30, 2008. The launch of both units took place in August of the following year. After completion of all tests, the commissioning was carried out, as traditionally, in March. For the Hyūga this was March 18, 2009 and for the Ise March 16, 2011
The code 16DDH for the first unit comes from the Japanese calendar, with 2004 (year of construction) being the 16th year of the Heisei era.

technology
General
The helicopter carriers built in stealth design - the surfaces are kept as smooth as possible and right angles are avoided as far as possible - were primarily developed for submarine hunting . They are 195 meters long, 32 meters wide and with a maximum displacement of 19,000 tons have a draft of 7 meters. In terms of displacement, they are therefore comparable with the Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi and the French Mistral class .
You have the option of transporting eleven helicopters . However, the regular equipment consists of three submarine fighter helicopters (SH-60J / K) and one multi-purpose helicopter (CH-101). In theory, they could also take on board VTOL aircraft like the F-35B .
Armament and Electronics
The armament consists of a Mk 41 Vertical Launching System with 16 cells. This is divided into twelve cells for anti-submarine missiles of the type RUM-139 VL-ASROC and four cells for ESSM guided missiles (with four guided missiles per cell). There are also two triple torpedo tubes of the Mk. 32 SVTT type for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes and two close-range defense systems of the Phalanx Block 1B type . Two 12.7 mm machine guns complete the equipment.
The ships are equipped with a FCS-3 AESA - Air target radar equipped, which ensures the ESSM missile air defense. The sonar system is of the type OQQ-21. There are decoy launchers and electronic warfare systems on board, as well as extensive communication and command systems to serve as flagships .
