features

The delicate to moderately vigorous plants form soft, low, dark green to brownish green lawns. The creeping or flooding trunks are few and irregularly branched. Paraphyllia are absent. The moist, upright leaves are drawn together into a blunt tip from an ovate to lanceolate base. The very strong and often kneeling leaf veins usually end in the leaf tip. The lamina cells are rhombic to elongated hexagonal in the middle of the leaf, square to rectangular on the leaf base.

The seta is up to 2 centimeters long, the spore capsule is arched, cylindrical and narrowed under the mouth, the capsule lid is truncated conical. The spores are 10 to 18 micrometers in size. The species rarely fruit.

Location claims and distribution

As a water moss, Hygroamblystegium fluviatile grows mainly on rock, more rarely on wood, in lime-free, rarely also in moderately calcareous, cool, fast-flowing streams and rivers, either submerged in water, in the splash zone or outside the water in places that only dry out briefly. It also populates bank reinforcements or concrete on rivers or canals. Common companion mosses include Platyhypnidium riparioides , Fontinalis antipyretica , Brachythecium plumosum , Cinclidotus riparius .

In Germany and also in Austria and Switzerland, the species is moderately frequent to very rare or absent. It has expanded its area in recent decades by expanding the river. Worldwide there are occurrences in Europe, parts of Asia, in North Africa, in North and South America.
