The Hyparschale in Templin (former name: dining and dance restaurant »Bürgergarten« ) is a former restaurant and discotheque designed by the civil engineer Ulrich Müther . The inauguration took place on October 7, 1972. The Templiner Hyparschale was from 1977 a restaurant for the then nearby vacation home of the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) "Salvador Allende". After the fall of the Wall , the pavilion has been empty since May 1991 and fell into disrepair until the first renovation work at the end of 2015. In 2004 the shell structure was placed under a preservation order.

Templin Canal –– fortification of the embankment with fascines

The building is located in the Templiner Stadtpark Bürgergarten on the edge of the historic city center. The park is separated from the old town by the uneven and tree-lined Templiner Canal . Construction began in 1967, but material and financial bottlenecks resulted in a multi-year construction freeze. In the early 1970s, the FDGB acquired the site. In addition to the construction of a recreation home for 400 guests and the completion of the Hypar shell , an elongated, single-storey functional building was also attached to the Hypar shell .

The distinctive double-curved prestressed concrete ceiling of Hyparschale is self-supporting. It consists of a hyperbolic paraboloid shell and spans a square area of 20.5 × 20.5 meters. The originally completely circumferential window front measures 8.38 meters at its highest point. In the basement there was a bar with a disco, which was also open to the general public and very popular with the residents of Templin.

FDGB holiday home “Salvador Allende” on the Templiner Canal, demolished in 2014

On April 5, 1974, the foundation stone for the so-called bed block of the FDGB holiday home "Salvador Allende" was laid, and after three years of construction, the hotel began operating on May 16, 1977. After the reunification, the rest home was closed in May 1991, in contrast to the FDGB holiday home "Friedrich Engels", today Seehotel Templin , no investors were willing to invest here. After heated discussions about its future use, the city council decided to demolish it and had it carried out in spring 2014. The building site was unsealed and converted into a park lawn. The boiler room of the holiday home was left intact in the ground; since summer 2019 it has been used as a sleeping and nesting place for bats.

A lack of financial means prevented a renovation of the Hypar shell until the beginning of 2016, so that in addition to vandalism, water damage also occurred. After “intensive discussions” with the Bundestag member Jens Koeppen (CDU) and the efforts of Bundestag member Stefan Zierke (SPD), 73,000 euros were made available from the federal funding program for the preservation of national monuments in 2015. This enabled the roof ceiling to be renovated. The building also receives support from the German Foundation for Monument Protection , the Wüstenrot Foundation and the Uckermark district. At the request of the city, the federal government approved and provided around 200,000 euros in funding for the renovation of the Hypar shell in 2017 . Further funds are provided by the monument funding program of the Brandenburg Ministry of Culture. In order to restore the building to its original shape, the annex on the parking lot side and the boiler house behind the Hypar shell were demolished.

In 2014 the spa town of Templin announced a two-stage competition for the redesign of the Bürgergarten in order to increase its attractiveness as a future “family-oriented spa, recreation and adventure park”. The contract was awarded in 2016 to the design of the landscape planner Frank Buck, funds from the Euroregion Pomerania are to finance the redesign. Former FDGB holiday guests still visit the Templin health resort today as nature or bathing tourists.

In June 2018, the city council decided to set up a day-care center in the outbuilding of the Hyparschale . In addition, the administration of the Uckermärkische Seen nature park   and a gastronomic offer will be located in the adjoining 400 m² functional building . The construction costs are estimated at around 3.9 million euros, plus ancillary and planning costs of around 1.6 million euros. The necessary funding is available for this.

On December 13, 2018, the completion of the work on the refurbished glass facade was celebrated with a "sealing party". After an invitation to tender, the companies were selected at the beginning of April 2019. Play and fitness facilities are planned on the slope below the Hypar shell. A planned adventure playground on the slope will not be built for the time being for cost reasons. For the 750th anniversary of Templin in 2020, the terraces on the banks of the Templin Canal are also to be converted into a family garden, with numerous apple trees of old varieties on the slope. The daycare center with 80 childcare places is scheduled to open in September 2021.

  • In addition to the Hypar shell , Müther designed two other shell structures in Templin: a kiosk on Lake Templin (1969) and a repair and vehicle hall of the Uckermärkische Verkehrsgesellschaft (UVG) northwest of the old town (1973), which are still in use today. The roof of the hall runs downwards in 5 × 2 funnel-shaped support columns (umbrella shells) and can therefore only be seen from the inside. Between the shells there are convex ribbons of windows that let in daylight from above. The hall is Müther's only industrial building.
