The ship class was commissioned in 2012 and, according to the shipping company, is an investment of 4 billion SEK (around 380 million euros ). The innovative design was developed in collaboration between Stena Bulk, Stena Teknik and the shipyard. Each ship has 18 tanks with a volume of 3000 m³ each and a special coating for quick cleaning. This allows the tankers to transport various products at the same time and adapt flexibly to the respective market.
During the tensions in the Gulf of Oman in 2019 was Stena Impero on 19 July 2019 by units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Strait of Hormuz applied and on the roads of Bandar Abbas , together with its 23-man crew set. The Iranian authorities accuse the ship of violating international shipping rules and of having collided with a fishing vessel . The shipping company and management deny the allegations and are in contact with the authorities. The primary focus of the ongoing negotiations is to enable crew members to return to their families. In the meantime, the shipping company has also contacted the governments of the occupation nationalities concerned. On August 25, 2019, media reported that there were signs that the ship would be released soon. Seven crew members from India were released on September 4 . The ship was cleared by Iran in late September and left Iranian waters on the morning of September 27, 2019.
